Hans Haacke. Retrospektive 1. März 2025 - 9. Juni 2025 Hans Haacke (* 1936) ist eine Legende der politischen Konzeptkunst – zugleich ist sein Werk hochaktuell und von großer Relevanz in der Gegenwart. Als Gründungsfigur der künstlerischen Institutionskritik hat Haacke das Verhältnis von Kunst und Gesellschaft neu definiert und Generationen von Künstler*innen geprägt. Ab den 1960er-Jahren reflektiert Hans Haacke zunächst biologische, physikalische und ökologische Systeme, um dann soziopolitische Strukturen in den Blick zu nehmen und einer präzisen, oft schonungslosen Analyse zu unterziehen. So thematisiert er Machtmissbrauch, Mechanismen von Ausgrenzung und Ungleichheit, geschichtspolitische Verwerfungen, Verquickungen von öffentlichen Institutionen, Politik und Ökonomie sowie nicht zuletzt antidemokratische Tendenzen. Die Ausstellung lädt dazu ein, die Aktualität von Hans Haackes Kunst neu zu entdecken und ihre Bedeutung für drängende Fragen unserer Zeit zu erfassen: Wie beeinflussen uns Kapital, Ideologie und Geschichte? Welche Bilder, Rhetoriken und manipulativen Strategien setzt der nationalistische Populismus ein? Wie steht es um die Komplizität des Kunstfeldes, aber auch um das kritische Potenzial der Kunst? Die Retrospektive beleuchtet die Vielseitigkeit dieses Werks in einer umfassenden Auswahl aus allen Schaffensperioden von 1959 bis heute und beinhaltet neben zahlreichen ikonischen Arbeiten insbesondere auch jene Projekte, die Hans Haacke speziell für den österreichischen Kontext entwickelt hat. Retrospective 1 March 2025 - 9 June 2025 Hans Haacke (b. 1936) is a legend of political conceptual art—and his work remains strikingly relevant in today’s world. As a founding figure of artistic institutional critique, Haacke redefined the relationship between art and society and profoundly influenced generations of artists. Beginning in the 1960s, Haacke first explored biological, physical, and ecological before shifting his focus to socio-political structures. His work unflinchingly addresses abuses of power, mechanisms of exclusion and inequality, historico-political disruptions; the entanglements of public institutions, politics, and economics, while also confronting anti-democratic tendencies. This exhibition is an invitation to rediscover Haacke’s art and its relevance to the pressing questions of our time: How do capital, ideology, and history shape our lives? What images, rhetoric, and manipulative tactics does nationalist populism employ? How about the complicity of the art world, but also the critical potential of art? With a comprehensive selection from all periods, from 1959 to the present, the retrospective highlights the versatility of Haacke’s oeuvre. In addition to numerous iconic works, it includes in particular those projects that Haacke developed specifically for the Austrian context.
