Here's Why Airbus has long established itself as a leader in transforming commercial aircraft, renowned for their efficiency and reliability, into powerful military tools for combat and support missions. A prime example is the A3 30 MRTT program – a military tanker and transport aircraft developed from the A3 30 commercial airframe. But that started with wide-body aircraft, what about narrow-body aircraft? Airbus has just revealed a program to modify the long-haul narrow-body A3 21 XLR to provide resources for the French Navy. So what exactly are their big plans? Let’s find out! A new XLR version Airbus' HUGE UPGRADE on A321XLR will Shock Everyone! Here's Why In early February, Airbus officially won a two-year research contract from the French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA) to accelerate the development of a new Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA), based on the A3 21 XLR long-range narrow-body commercial aircraft. The modern maritime patrol aircraft is scheduled to enter service after 20 30, with the aim of strengthening the French military's maritime defense and surveillance capabilities. Airbus' HUGE UPGRADE on A321XLR will Shock Everyone! Here's Why The contract, signed on 4 February, marks a major step forward for the A3 21 MPA project, moving it beyond the feasibility and initial architecture phase, which was launched in late 20 22 with Airbus Defence and Space as the prime contractor. Thales, a leading military equipment supplier, is also involved in the project, contributing to the development of advanced sensors and electronics for the new aircraft. According to Airbus, the A3 21 MPA will be designed on the basis of the XLR long-range commercial aircraft airframe, featuring long-range capabilities and high flexibility. The aircraft is optimized to serve important missions such as anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship warfare, intelligence gathering, reconnaissance, and maritime surveillance.
