Recorded: September 24, 2019 Speaker: Beth Gadkowski MD, MPH, MS Through training evaluations, discussions with nurses and clinicians working in public health units, and through needs assessments with different state consultants and controllers, SNTC has identified that there is significant overlap in people at risk for HIV and those at risk for TB as well. The SNTC has identified this as a need in every state. The clinical management of these 2 medical conditions is challenging and can result in added toxicity, so TB clinicians and nurses need to understand how to minimize the risk of toxicity and how to manage it when it occurs. If both diseases are appropriately treated, the patient has is more likely to be cured of TB, can have a shorter treatment duration with potentially fewer side effects, and is less likely to have relapse of TB disease. Appropriate treatment of TB can also improve the control of HIV and reduce morbidity and mortality from HIV.
