In this excerpt from the S03 episode about New Orleans, Mikael visits Tremé, America’s oldest African-American neighbourhood and once a thriving, prosperous district. Until the I-10 highway was built in the 1960s and promptly gutted both the neighbourhood and its backbone, Claiborne Avenue - like so many other highways that caused segregation and decline in communities. Mikael interviews Asali DeVan Ecclesiastes, the director of strategic neighbourhood development at the New Orleans Business Alliance about the massive, 25 block revitalisation project called the Claiborne Corridor Cultural Innovation District. A visionary project focused on bringing life and commerce back to this historic neighbourhood by reimagining the space beneath the highway.
