Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, also known as Tarquin the Proud, was the king who ruled ancient Rome from 535 BC until his overthrow in 509 BC. Known to be the seventh and last king of Rome, he acquired the throne through the assassination of his father-in-law Servius Tullius, Rome's previous king. Superbus was a monarch with an autocratic persona, who refused to consult Roman senators during his rule, a tyrant who, with his disregard for Roman custom and law, added dramatic chapters in the annals of Roman history. Superbus' reign was marked by a number of renowned victories, including the subjugation of Latin towns and the conquest of the city of Gabii, along with monumental endeavors like the completion of the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus on the Capitoline Hill. However, his autocratic rule and disrespect for Roman institutions inevitably stoked the flames of discontent among the Roman elite. His reign eventually ended abruptly following a scandal revolving around his son Sextus Tarquinius, leading to his exile and the establishment of the Roman Republic.
