Breaking Barriers to Adult Literacy Access: Insights from Adults with Low Literacy Across the U.S.

Literacy is the key to prosperity and well-being. Foundational adult literacy skills are clearly linked to higher income, better health outcomes, stronger job prospects, greater civic participation, and improved language and literacy skills for the next generation. But recent OECD research shows that 28% of adults in the United States have foundational literacy needs, yet existing educational programs reach only a fraction of this population. Guided by the National Action Plan for Adult Literacy, the Adult Literacy and Learning Impact Network (ALL IN) focuses on transforming adult literacy among two interconnected groups: eligible adult learners and the education providers who serve them.  The new ALL IN Learning Series is a virtual experience designed to increase community engagement in adult literacy issues. This month, join ALL IN in partnership with FTI Consulting for a transformative learning session: Breaking Barriers to Adult Literacy Access: Insights from Adults with Low Literacy Across the United States. The session will highlight findings from our previous research on employers’ and policy influencers’ perspectives on adult literacy, as well as the first-ever national survey among 2,000 adults who are eligible but not enrolled in adult literacy services. The findings in this report demonstrate what we knew to be true, but did not have sufficient evidence for: adults with low literacy recognize the value of education and want to improve their skills for life, for work, for their families. The number one barrier to access remains lack of awareness about available services. We’ll dive into what these adults truly need from education programs, the barriers they face, and their aspirations for learning. Watch as we highlight actionable insights to better serve adult learners and address this national literacy challenge.
