Various of villagers dancing with visitors STORYLINE: Thousands visited Holloko in north-eastern Hungary to witness the tiny village’s unique Easter Monday tradition of men pouring buckets of water on local women. The Hungarian Easter tradition of sprinkling women with water goes back centuries and has been enriched by countless customs. In the old days, the tradition was to water only the girls who are desirable candidates to be a wife. Some legends suggest the purifying effect of water is related to baptism, which people used to hold in the spring centuries ago. Although the Christian religion is widespread throughout the world, Easter watering was mostly confined to Central Europe. Easter is the greatest holiday of the entire year in the Roman Catholic Church as it commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, as recounted in the Bible. Holloko, the village hosting the tradition of sprinkling women with water has been a World Heritage Site since 1987. The village built in the 17th -18th century, was the first in the world to receive this status due to the unique preservation of the traditional settlement form, traditional architecture and village life.
