Simon runs through a number of factors that influence what type of material to use, and explains how materials vary considerably in their construction, their tensile strength and their diameter to strength ratio - something few anglers even consider. Take two tippet materials of exactly the same diameter - let's say 0.010", with one breaking at 15lb and the other at 8lb. Most anglers would choose the stronger one, but there are many other attributes to be aware of than just strength, and with certain rigs the right choice would actually be the weaker one of those two.
