UNI Records opened it's doors in 1966 as a independent label although funded by Universal Studios. All of our sales and promotions were through Independent Record Distributors. After great success for four years, corporate heads at the parent company , MCA, Inc. decided to merge UNI into their Decca Branch Distribution Network. This film was made in 1970, by UNI Publicist head Norman Winter to introduce UNI Record's staff and artists to the Decca personnel. *UNI STAFF FEATURED IN THIS FILM: Russ Regan, Rick Frio, Pat Pipolo, Norman Winter and others. *UNI ARTISTS FEATURED IN THIS FILM: Strawberry Alarm Clock, Hugh Masekela, Neil Diamond, Bill Cosby, Elton John , The Foundations, and more. ____________________________ When UNI Records opened it's doors late in 1966, we were distributed by independent record distributors across the country. This new label was the brainchild of Ned Tanen, an executive at the Universal Studios Tower office. The studio owned Decca Records, but UNI was to be seperate and apart from the very staid company. Tanen placed the company in the heart of the Sunset Strip. He hired Russ Regan from Warner Brothers Records as General Manager and head of A&R, Pat Pipolo from Liberty Records to head promotion and Rick Frio from Liberty's sister company, Imperial Records, for sales and marketing. The team was set. We had various staff members to function as well as we did. In face, we did extremely well. Almost out of the box, we had our first hit and it seemed as though we never stopped. After about three years we caught the attention of the tower executives who wanted UNI to be distributed through the Decca Records branches. We were less than thrilled. In order to introduce our label, product and personnel to the new people at the Decca branches, Norman Winter, our publicity head, set upon making this film, his first undertaking. What you see here has been tucked away for almost 50 years It does show some fading of time on video, but not from my memory. Take some time from your busy day to see a labor of love from a half a century ago. Rick Frio/UNI RECORDS
