I'm finally able to share with you a new binaural video I managed to record during the amazing 2020 Dix Mille Tours racing weekend by Peter Auto at Circuit Paul Ricard. It kinda long but believe me, it's only 1/5 of the binaural material that I have produced in those 3 days, so I don't exclude a 'Part 2' video in the future. Really happy with the general quality of this video, especially by the fact there was a really strong wind during the first two days, but the wind shields on the microphones did a fantastic job (can't say the same for my camcorder because I had to stabilize each scene while editing even if it was mounted on a firm tripod...). For this upload, I'd have loved to put the circuit's map at the beginning of each scene in order to let you know the exact spots from where the microphone (and camera) wass recording, but it's something I have to study better for the next 3D audio uploads. Hope you like it! -- What the hell is a 3D/Binaural recording? -- Binaural recordings are reproductions of sound the way human ears hear it. Traditionally, recordings have been made using mono or stereo. Mono uses a single microphone while stereo uses two, spaced apart from each other. Binaural recording takes the stereo method one step further by placing two microphones approximately at the same average distance that exists between one and the other human ear. To recreate the best effect you must put the microphones in your ears or by using a "dummy head" (wherein a mannequin head is outfitted with a microphone in each ear) because having a real head or a head shape that separates the two microphones is what makes the magic works. In fact if a car passes on your left side the sound will take a few extra microseconds to reach the right ear and it will also be louder in one ear (left) than the other. This is caused by the fact we have a thick skull and spongy brain between the two ears and sound waves interact with the physical constitution of the listener and the surrounding space. Keeping the microphone static it enhances the surround and depth effect typical of the binaural recordings. #DixMilleTours #CircuitPaulRicard #PeterAuto ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ When you're at Circuit Paul Ricard (with a media pass) you can record and watch cars in 'two ways': From the external service road that goes all the way around the track (I'll call it 'the outside'); From some areas in the middle of the track which I call them 'the islands', placed in the first part of the track. There's also an internal, brief service road that goes from the pit entry to Turn 12. Basically when you're in the outside you always have cars 'in front of you', if you will.. but when you're inside the track (in one of the islands or in that internal service road) you are always surrounded by cars and their sounds, being always in the middle of two parts of the track. That's really cool when it comes to binaural recordings because you can feel the cars driving all around your head. You can understand it better by checking the circuit's layout at this link: https://www.circuitpaulricard.com/ass...
