In this conversation, I’m joined by Denise Kavaliasuskas, someone who does incredibly important work supporting people who are in — or recovering from — narcissistic relationships. This isn’t a topic either of us speak about from textbooks or theory alone. Denise and I both understand this terrain deeply because we’ve lived it. We’ve experienced narcissistic dynamics firsthand, and we’ve both had children involved in those situations. When we say we get it, we truly do. Denise supports individuals who are navigating the confusion, self-doubt, and emotional exhaustion that often comes with narcissistic relationships. Many people reach out to her feeling overwhelmed, questioning their reality, and wondering how they ended up feeling so disconnected from themselves. Denise helps bring clarity where there has been chaos, and steadiness where there has been emotional unpredictability. One of the most damaging aspects of narcissistic relationships is the erosion of self-trust. Over time, people can lose confidence in their own thoughts, feelings, and instincts. Denise works with clients to rebuild that inner foundation — helping them recognise unhealthy patterns, strengthen boundaries, and reconnect with their sense of self. For parents, the impact can feel even heavier. Children are often caught in the middle of dynamics they don’t understand but feel deeply. They may become anxious, withdrawn, angry, or hyper-vigilant. Both Denise and I understand how painful it is to watch a child absorb stress that was never meant for them. That shared experience is why our work aligns so naturally. While Denise focuses on supporting adults as they regain clarity and empowerment, I support both adults and children in releasing emotional overwhelm and restoring a sense of safety. Together, we hold space for healing that acknowledges the full picture — including the long-term impact on families. If you are in a narcissistic relationship, leaving one, or dealing with the aftermath of one, please know this: you are not weak, broken, or imagining things. These dynamics are complex, and support makes a real difference. And if children are involved, help matters even more. The sooner emotional safety is restored, the more resilient everyone becomes.
