During his presentation Campbell Thomson will tell us more about The Lanarkshire Yeomanry a little known volunteer military unit with its roots in rural Lanarkshire. Formed in 1819 by members of the Lanarkshire gentry, its initial purpose was as a peacekeeping force as there was then no organised police service. In later years its members were to see action in the Boer War, the Great War of 1914-18 and in particular during WW2 when it made up two Regiments of Field Artillery. One of them was taken POW on the Fall of Singapore in 1942 and its troops were to experience the worst kind of horror as prisoners of the Japanese. Later Alistair Allan will share the story of his Granda, Robert Allan, and his brothers who served in the Great War. During his presentation he will show how information often comes from different sources and the importance of re-visiting information many years after first finding it. It's amazing how much you miss on the first read and what new information is available years later!
