The Qualities That Matter Complete: A Citizen's Perspective on Law Enforcement

As many of you know, one of my goals with this channel is to explore perceptions of law enforcement from people across all walks of life. I believe that real, honest conversations are the key to understanding the complex relationship between police and the communities we serve. Today’s episode is special because it takes us on a road trip through Texas with someone whose perspective I think you’ll find both genuine and thought-provoking. I had the privilege of sitting down with Roger, a 59-year-old retired auto mechanic from Waxahachie, Texas. Roger grew up in the Texas Panhandle and has spent his life working with his hands, serving his community in his own way through decades of honest work. I wanted to hear his unfiltered thoughts about law enforcement—what he thinks makes a good police officer, how his perceptions have been shaped over the years, and what he believes officers need to do to properly serve the public. We started our journey by picking Roger up and heading to Paris, Texas, where we stopped at Burgerland—an old-fashioned burger joint that’s been voted number one for burgers and fries eight years running. There’s something about sharing a meal in a place like that that makes conversations more genuine and relaxed. We talked about his earliest memories of police, his experiences over the years, and what he sees when he looks at law enforcement today. After leaving Burgerland, we made our way back and stopped at White Rhino Coffee in Cedar Hill, where we finished our conversation over craft coffee. This setting gave us the perfect atmosphere to dive deeper into the qualities Roger believes officers should possess and his hopes and concerns for the future of policing. What I appreciate most about Roger is his honesty. He doesn’t hold back, but he also speaks from a place of genuine concern for both the community and the men and women who wear the badge.
