Members of the House represent a geographic area — known as electorates — which match up with population spread. The Senate, however, represents states or territories. The number of Senators is spread equally across the country, giving less populated states an edge. There are also a lot of crossbench and minor party senators (such as the Greens and One Nation) because of the Senate's voting system, known as proportional representation, which means people who receive very few primary votes can still be elected based on preferences.
