Historical Context: The Tenjin Matsuri holds a place of pride as one of Japan’s top three festivals, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri and Tokyo’s Kanda Matsuri. Taking place on the 24th and 25th of July, this festival is not just an annual event, but an embodiment of Osaka’s spirit and a testament to its rich cultural heritage. Often referred to as the Festival of the Gods, Tenjin Matsuri pays homage to Sugawara no Michizane – a revered 9th-century scholar, poet, and politician. Today, he is deified as the god of learning and is the central figure of Osaka’s Tenmangu Shrine, where the festival finds its heart. The two-day festival is a blend of ancient rituals and lively celebrations.
