In a Dublin tenement during the Irish Civil War, Juno Boyle (Sara Allgood) struggles to keep her family alive while her husband “Captain” Jack Boyle (Edward Chapman) struts, brags of a seafaring past, and suddenly develops “pains in his legs” whenever work is mentioned. His pub pal Joxer Daly (Sidney Morgan) flatters Jack’s vanity and shares his loafing. Their daughter Mary Boyle (Kathleen O’Regan) is on strike, cooling toward steady Jerry Devine (Arthur Sinclair) as she dreams of a bigger life. Son Johnny Boyle (John Laurie), missing an arm from the fighting, sits shaking in the corner, terrified the Irregulars will punish him for betraying a comrade, Robbie Tancred. A flicker of fortune arrives when schoolteacher Charles Bentham (Reginald Gardiner), who has been courting Mary, brings word that a relative’s will may leave the Boyles a sizeable inheritance. Neighbors crowd in, including an excitable “Orator” (Barry Fitzgerald) and sharp Mrs. Madigan (Maire O’Neill), and Jack instantly turns prosperous in his imagination. He vows to reform, buys a new suit, orders furniture and a gramophone on credit, and talks of a new start, while Juno, wary but tempted, lets herself hope. She counts pennies anyway, fearing the promise is only another performance. The flat becomes a stage for noisy celebration, but reality presses in when Tancred’s funeral procession passes the window and his grieving mother pauses at the door to pray for peace; Juno comforts her while Johnny, half-mad with guilt, nearly collapses. Then the fantasy collapses too: Bentham vanishes, the will is bungled and swallowed by legal costs, and Mary is revealed to be pregnant and abandoned. Creditors arrive one by one to repossess Jack’s suit, the gramophone, and the furniture he flaunted. Humiliated, Jack turns vicious, disowning Mary and running back to the pub with Joxer, who needles him and then deserts him when the money is gone. Johnny’s terror peaks when armed Irregulars come for him; he is dragged away, and word soon comes that a bullet-riddled body like his has been found. Refusing to be destroyed by Jack’s empty swagger, Juno takes Mary and leaves, choosing hard survival over false pride and vowing to raise the child with dignity. Jack staggers home drunk with Joxer, still boasting and complaining about the world; when he drops his last coins on the floor, he mutters that “the whole world’s in a terrible state,” still unaware his son is dead and his wife and daughter have gone. A 1930 British Black & White all-talking sound tragicomedy film (aka "Rich and Strange") adapted & directed by Alfred Hitchcock, produced by John Maxwell (uncredited), based on Seán O'Casey's 1924 play of the same name, cinematography by Jack E. Cox, starring Maire O'Neill, Sidney Morgan, Sara Allgood, John Laurie, Dave Morris, Kathleen O'Regan, John Longden, and Dennis Wyndham. Screen debut appearances of Barry Fitzgerald, Edward Chapman and Maire O'Neill. Released by Wardour Films. Although Edward Chapman played the father of John Laurie and Kathleen O'Regan, he was four years younger than Laurie and two years older than O'Regan in real life. Hitchcock's first film shot entirely with sound throughout. His previous film "Blackmail" (1929) was shot silently and later parts were re-filmed with sound, post dubbing being a non-existent technology yet, and released as a "part-talkie". The first Sir Alfred Hitchcock movie to use the long-take technique. The original Broadway production of Seán O'Casey's successful 1924 play opened at the Mayfair Theater on March 15, 1926 and ran for seventy-four performances. The play was revived on Broadway in 1927, 1934, 1937, 1940, and 1988. It has been filmed a number of other times for television. Sean O'Casey and Sir Alfred Hitchcock had formed a friendship prior to the filming. Hitchcock had a huge admiration for the original play and later said that he made the film (one of his most untypical) mainly because he didn't want anyone else to make it - he was fearful that an ordinary hack director would mess up the original and make a banal travesty of it. The friendship of the two men continued until Hitchcock left Britain in 1939. They never saw each other again after that, but Hitchcock remained fond of O'Casey and claimed that the Karl Swenson character in "The Birds" was a little homage to his friend. In the film it is the daughter who scolds the mother about extravagance based on her lover's meretricious promises, while in the play Juno warns her husband. In the film Joxer is introduced in effect as a secret Fenian; in the play he's a pointless drunk with no political connection. An underrated and misunderstood Hitchcock film. It's neither a thriller or suspense film, but based on a masterfully written comic tragedy. A heavy-handed, moving story about Irish troubles during the uprising with some very sharp and wicked humor and some very tragic commentary. Not Hitchcock's best. Recommended for Hitchcock completists.
