Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together. Special Thanks to Vincent Wing-Wah Tang :) Ndēi háu! Nguōi kiāu Andy. Ndēi kéi jiang ā? Hello! My name is Andy. How are you? Let's talk about the Hoisanese language. Sze Yup (Siyi in Mandarin Pinyin) literally means "Four Counties", and is a grouping of the four rural districts/counties in the Southeast Chinese province of Guangdong located geographically near the Pearl River Delta. The local residents speak a branch of Yue Chinese, making it related to but not mutually intelligible with Cantonese. Sze Yup dialects may have different phonetic articulations and different vocabulary depending on the age generation speaking it, dubbed “old-fashioned” 老派 (lau55 pʰai55). Sze Yup includes the county-level cities (市 “si21”) Taishan (Hoisan), Kaiping (Hoihen), and Enping (Yanping), as well as the city district (區 "kʰui33") Xinhui (Sunwui). The name Sze Yup is common among Chinese emigrants from the area, however, the county-level city Heshan (Hoksan) was established later and added to the grouping, leading to the name Ng Yup ("Five Counties") being integrated by locals. The area is known for being the ancestral home of many of the first overseas Chinese emigrants, particularly in the USA for the Gold Rush/Transcontinental Railroad where Sze Yup immigrants established Chinatowns in San Francisco and Los Angeles as well as in Australia in Melbourne. Many of these immigrants were from Taishan and Kaiping, Taishanese therefore serving a representative dialect of Siyi Yue. Sze Yup people also constitute the second largest Han group in Hong Kong. The region is the ancestral homeland of many Cantonese/Hongkonger stars such as Andy Lau in addition to important political figures overseas such as Gary Locke and Judy Chu. Hundreds of multi-story watchtowers called diaolou are mostly found in Kaiping and serve as artifacts of emigrants from Sze Yup who gained wealth overseas and returned to their homeland to build fortified homes for their families to protect from thieves, incorporating Western architectural styles. Kaipingese dialou were designated a UNESCO Heritage Site in 2007. Chenpi, or dried orange peel used in traditional cooking and medicine, originates in Xinhui. One of the main two styles of Southern Lion Dance originates in Hok San. The Taishanese language is also spoken by one of the characters in the critically acclaimed 2023 film Joy Ride. This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes.
