It took Moroccan film director Asmae El Moudir ten years to finish her IMS-supported documentary "The Mother of All Lies". Faced with a culture of silence both within her family and in the Moroccan society as a whole, Asmae decided that the only way she could tell the story she wanted to tell was to re-create her family members as dolls and build a miniature version of her Casablanca neighbourhood. The film's narrative is centred around the 1981 so-called "Bread Riots" in Casablanca and the Moroccan authorities subsequent cover-up of killings and violence. This is tied to Asmae's own family and their inability to collectively address taboos and traumas in their shared history. IMS supported the making of "The Mother of All Lies" as part of our documentary film programme that empowers voices and stories from global majority countries. "The Mother of All Lies" premiered at the Festival de Cannes last year where Asmae el Moudir won the Un Certain Regard award for Best Director.
