Wing Chun vs MMA - Sparring Series (2012)

This is one of the earlier matches from the same night as the "Wing Chun Vs Krav Maga & TDK" video    • Wing Chun vs Krav Maga & TKD - Sparri...   This was the second time we invited the MMA team to our gym for a night of sparring... the guys were friendly and respectful... no big egos on display and everyone more or less had a good time... This was a friendly, light match with some decent action and transitions. Pierre wasnt trying to take my head off... but we were both trying to "win". I believe at this point Pierre's main background was in boxing and wrestling... He was still relatively new to BJJ. He went on to become a professional MMA fighter last I heard. Pierre wore his boxing gloves and I wore the MMA style gloves, because for us wearing the big gloves limits our options quite a bit and makes using many of our techniques impossible. The MMA team was fine with the modified rules for sparring. I think many TMA practitioners have a negative image of MMA gyms and MMA fighters in general... this is really too bad because in my experience most are fair and friendly and even likely to let you spar with these kind of "modified" rules if you don't show up with something to prove and just honestly want to learn and improve. The first time they joined us for sparring we struggled a lot to deal with how dynamic and well rounded they were. If I recall correctly if the other matches went to the ground we would stop after a few seconds... but I said that I wanted to continue on the ground. I had been teaching myself the "WT ground fighting" system as created by Sifu Emin and I wanted to see how I would be able to handle myself if I ended up on my back. Keep in mind I hadnt done a single BJJ or MMA class up to this point... so I had no idea what side control was or mount or how to escape them... its basically just me going on instinct. Even still I think I did pretty well and I felt pretty comfortable even on bottom mount. These matches opened my eyes to ground fighting and made me interested in learning BJJ and MMA.
