The Kalabagh Dam is a proposed hydroelectric dam on the Indus River at Kalabagh in the Mianwali District, Punjab, Pakistan, which has been intensely debated along ethnic and regional lines for over 40 years. If constructed, the dam could generate 3,600 megawatts of electricity. However, on 26 May 2008, the Federal Minister for Water and Power of Pakistan, Raja Pervez Ashraf, said that the "Kalabagh Dam would not be constructed" and that the project had been cancelled due to "opposition from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and other stakeholders, the project was no longer feasible". Kalabagh is known for its red hills of the salt range and the scenic view of the Indus traversing through the hills. It also produces handicrafts, especially footwear and Makhandi Halwa. Kalabagh is also the main town of Mianwali District which has a market of all the needs for life. While the Kalabagh Dam Project was initiated in 1953 as an irrigation project to use the waters of the Indus River to irrigate infertile lands in Pakistan, it soon developed into a major effort to generate hydroelectric power for the Pakistani province of Punjab. Sindhi politicians believe that Sindh's share of Indus water may be affected and that the water from the dam will majorly be used for KPK or Punjab. MQM's leadership strongly condemned the decision of constructing the Kalabagh Dam and termed it as “Anti-Sindh PML-N and Kalabagh Dam”.
