Having now completed the basic airwork lessons, it was time to take to the circuit to practice takeoffs, circuits, approaches and landings. Standard circuit height at Bodmin is 800ft AAL, but with the cloud base coming in our circuits varied between 500ft and 600ft. Overall my conclusion is that your first circuit session is mentally draining (especially when they're smaller because of the low cloud base). Approach 1: I was too low and landed with the carb heat still on hot! Approach 2: Was better, but I was still not getting the flares quite right, or taking enough control of the rudder. Approach 3: I asked my instructor to demo a landing as I wanted to take a moment to observe the picture outside at various stages rather than concentrating on what's going on inside the aircraft. Approach 4: I was a bit high and fast at points, but was definitely starting to get into a bit more of a routine - my flare still wasn't fantastic. Approach 5: I flared too early on this one and got lazy with the rudders whilst trying to correct that mistake. Approach 6: I was a little fast to begin with and then my instructor gave a fantastic demonstration how how little control I was taking of the rudder. The approach felt better and things were starting to slow down around me, although I touched down a little later than we wanted. Approach 7: Another demonstration of how I've got to stay on the rudders at all times. Some final notes: I have footage from 3 lessons between Episode 1 and 2, but without the polarising filter the vast majority of the footage was flown. After waiting for the 2.5 hour export and uploading, I found I'd clipped 3 seconds of the outro! Please feel free to comment on what I've done wrong, what you think of the video (and maybe what I've done right). I'm always keen to improve my skills as an aviator. +++++ Current hours: C152: 5.1 (G-BNSM, G-CEYH) C172: 2.0 (G-BCZM) R2160: 1.1 (G-OCFC) Target PPL completion date: July 2014 +++++ Camera(s): GoPro Hero 3 Black Audio: (Coming soon) Sony ICDPX333.CE7 +++++ For some of the best flight training in the South West: http://www.cornwallflyingclub.com/
