How to Fertilize Your Houseplants for Beginners – How to Feed your indoor Plants. Liquid Gold Leaf: https://geni.us/LiquidGoldLeaf Baby Bio: https://geni.us/BabyBio Tomorite: https://geni.us/TomoriteFeed Thankfully we are getting to the end of winter and fast approaching Spring! Here in the UK the temperatures have lifted a little and the sun is shining, there is still a chance of a big old dump of snow but I’m optimistic that we are well on our way into the warmer weather and that means we should be looking to feed our houseplants again, I stop feeding my houseplants in late autumn as the growth slows down, there is less daylight for them to grow and the temperatures fall. Obviously, if you live in a hot climate all year round you won’t have the same situation and if your plants are actively growing then you should still feed them, but many plants need a period of cooler months and go into a semi-dormant or dormant state so you need to give less water and stop feeding as it will not be actively taking up the water or growing new leaves so if you keep watering as normal you can risk rotting the plant from the water sitting around the roots and not being used. So now that the temperatures are rising again and the sun is streaming through the windows the growth rate of the plants will pick up and we can start with the feeding. So why do we feed our houseplants, well in the wild your houseplants will be growing in the soil where there is an unlimited supply of nutrients from the environment, things, like leaves falling onto the soil and breaking down by worms and insects, will add nutrients, maybe fruits and nuts hitting the forest floor and rotting down into the soil, animal waste! It all adds to the natural food of nature, but when we keep houseplants in pots they are in essence a sterile environment, there is no way to get any nutrients unless we give them some, the potting soil that the plant comes in will have some nutrients in but that will only last so long before the plant has used it all up, so in the active growing season of your houseplant, usually Spring to Fall – or Autumn as we call it then we need to give it a helping hand. Now some plants will survive without feeding, some plants don’t need it, so you will need to look up the care information for each of your houseplants to check what it prefers but most will benefit greatly from regular feeding. So now we know why and when let’s talk about what we can use. Well if you have ever looked at the plant food selection in a garden centre you will know that there is a huge selection of different brands to choose from, some are better than others, some are more expensive than others. Now I do want to say that you don’t have to spend a fortune if you can’t justify it, you can make your own basic plant food by cutting a bunch of nettles and leaving it to soak for a few weeks in a bucket of water, its going to smell really bad and not as scientific but if will feed your plants for free which is pretty cool, if you have a fish tank you can make use of the waste water when cleaning it out, the water will have lots of dissolved nutrients from the fish waste and even be at a good temperature for the plants too so there are cheap or free options but if you have a few pennies to spend on your hobby I would recommend Solid Gold Leaf houseplant fertilizer it has ALL of the nutriants that your plant needs to florish and its the only one in the world to contain calcium an essentail nutriant for the health of your indoor plants.
