I'm often asked about whether or not biocontrol organisms are appropriate for use if they can ostensibly defecate in the product. On the surface, this seems like a highly undesirable and atypical outcome. Certainly, nobody desires adulterants in their products, but whether one uses biocontrol agents or (bio)pesticides, the carapace, exuviae, frass, silk, and other bodily parts of various arthropods will still be left over, even in the most effective treatment applications. Luckily, unlike mammalian waste, herbivorous arthropod waste is not a threat to human health--even if the FDA maintain minimum regulations about how much can be allowed in a product.
