This is a small clip of Jerome Hines as Gurnemanz in 1983, performing his last Parsifal. He was 62. As always, full of self-doubt, he wondered if he could still sing Gurnemanz. He not only sang it but brought down the house and the critics with his timeless portrayal. This is just a clip. If I posted more of it, Youtube would delete it. BUT THIS TAPE WAS GIVEN TO ME BY JEROME HINES AND HE HAD THE RIGHTS TO IT. Jerome Hines was definitely the greatest bass America ever produced. No one could imagine Siepi or Tozzi making such an impression in Wagner. Hines' repertoire was indeed far ranging, from Gurnemanz, King Henry and Wotan to all the versions of Boris Godunov in Russian, and yet able to sing all the Italian basso cantante repertoire and Mozart. He sang Sarastro the most of anyone in New York, and I am still looking for a tape of his Don Giovanni which would have rivaled anyone in the role. His King Filippo was as highly regarded as his Inquisitore, and nobody sang Fiesco in Simon Boccanegra with as much forcefulness and control as Hines. His voice was a unique Italian basso cantante which had the royal richness to enable his journey to Wagner and Mussorgsky. When Henry Lewis was casting Meyerbeer's Le Prophete, he remarked about casting Hines, "I just had to have that voice in there."
