This video marks the start of a video series dedicated to the topic of piece optimization. In the series we are going to take a look at how to improve our pieces ranging from pawns, to bishops, to knights, to rooks, to the queen and even to the king. There are usually some guiding principles or rules that strong players use in order to know how to make the most of their pieces and at the same time make the least or try to hurt the opponent’s pieces. In this video, IM Alex Astaneh is going to explain how to optimize your queen, your knight and your rooks based on important principles. Summary: King safety/King optimization: In the opening and the middlegame we are concerned with keeping our king as safe as possible, almost always. The only big change later on in the game is that as pieces come off the board, as we move towards an endgame, the king suddenly becomes a fighting piece. It can often happen in king and pawn endgames as well as king and rook and pawn endgames. Those endgames can often be decided by the side who’s king is more active. But until that moment arrives we are just focused on the king being safe. Rooks: Rooks should be put on either open or semi-open files. A semi-open file favours the side that does not have a pawn. Rooks that are doubled upon a file increase their power substantially. One of the most powerful things that you can do in order to optimize your rooks, is to connect them. What is meant by this: One rook is looking at the other rook and the other rook is also eyeing up that rook. Basically, it can be said that they are connected. This is one of the big advantages of castling: When you castle, the rook that was at the edge of the board will suddenly come closer to the center. Rooks on the 7th rank (2nd rank) can be very powerful. Knights: Centralization of the Knight: Knight’s want to be centralized. The knight is a short-range piece, therefore we want knights which are either central or somewhat advanced. Stability: The second aspect which is just as important is stability. If there are no opponent pawns who can attack the centralized knight, it is a very stable piece. 📘 The pgn to this video can be downloaded on our website! ✏️ Don't miss to solve the provided exercises for this video on our website! — ⭐️ Social Media Links: Twitter: / chessfactor Facebook: / chessfactorofficial Lichess: https://lichess.org/@/chessfactor Twitch: / chessfactor — ♛ Chess Set Links: ➡️ Green chess set: https://www.bestchesssetever.com/coll... ➡️ Wooden chess set: https://www.chessware.de/Schachfigure... — #Chess #Chessfactor #ChessfactorBeginner #PieceOptimization
