Magma is now believed to have ascended to 2 miles below sea level. This is part of a recent change which has occurred at a portion of the Terceira volcano in the Azores, resulting in its alert level being raised. Today's video creates a model to discuss what exactly has changed, and gives broader context about the volcano's unrest which began in 2021. This will be analyzed through the perspective of a geologist. Note: This video's thumbnail image does NOT display the area where magma is shallowest (below ground) as highlighted in today's video. As a reminder: There is absolutely no reason to panic; the unrest at Terceira is still fairly weak despite the presence of at depth magma. Other unrest episodes have occurred beforehand, and most of these did not result in eruptions.
