Experience a haunting Dark Nordic Folk tale about the rise and fall of a greedy king. This cinematic track is a special release by VOICES of MIDGARD, performed exceptionally in English. In this Dark Folklore Story, we explore the ancient myth of a ruler who wanted to be a God. While our music is usually rooted in Old Norse and Old Icelandic, this English Folk song allows us to share the atmosphere of Northern Mythology and Medieval Legends with a wider audience. If you enjoy Pagan Folk and Ritual Music, this dark journey is for you. He crowned himself in borrowed light, And called the dawn his own. He sang of gold through fading fields — And ruled a thinning throne. Lyrics There once was a king With gold on his hands With banners that waved Across all his lands He said he was mighty He said he was strong He said he was chosen He said it all day long He said it in summer He said it in snow He said it to people Who already knew He said, “I am great!” He said, “Can’t you see?” He said, “All is perfect!” As far as I see. He said, “I am right!” He said it again. But nobody answered — Not even his men. He raised up a tax On bread and on grain On fish from the river On sun and on rain The coins came in From every door The king grew richer The markets grew poor He said, “See the gold?” He said, “It’s a sign!” He said, “All is growing!” He said, “All is mine!” He said, “Have no worry!” He said it with pride. While barns grew empty Out in the countryside. When no one cheered And no one clapped The king grew red His fingers snapped He stomped his boots He threw his cup He shouted, “Silence!” But nothing shut up The roofs bent low The smoke grew thin The songs grew quiet Where they had been The boats lay still Beside the shore The king saw gold And nothing more He said, “I am great!” He said, “All is well!” He said it so often He started to yell He said, “I am king!” He said it that day While all of his kingdom Was fading away He said he was great. He said it with pride. But kingdoms are quieter When hope has died. ________________ I had to take some "artistic liberties" for this track, so please don't take everything so seriously 😀😊 This piece continues the journey through dark Nordic folk — blending Old Norse and Old Icelandic vocals with atmospheric melodies and northern storytelling. Inspired by myth, landscape and memory, each composition is shaped by fjords, forests, firelight and the quiet strength of the North. If this piece resonates with you and you’d like to support the work behind it, Super Thanks are apreciated 😀 🔔 Subscribe for more Dark Nordic Folk: / @ctrlaltriff 🎶 Full Playlist: • Rituals of the North | Nordic Folk Chants ...
