Than Shwe's arrival in India on Sunday was the first by a leader of neighbouring Myanmar, also known as Burma, in 24 years. The visit is expected to strengthen bilateral cooperation on security, a hydroelectric project and cultural exchanges. Senior Gen. Than Shwe was given a ceremonial reception at the Indian Presidential Palace in New Delhi on Monday. Relations between Myanmar's military dictatorship and India have warmed over the past few years, easing strains created when the junta crushed a 1988 pro-democracy uprising. Meanwhile, Myanmar exiles living in New Delhi have continued their protests against India's decision to receive Than Shwe. Nearly 100 exiles demonstrated in the capital on Monday, carrying portraits of Myanmar's pro-democracy movement leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest since a pro-government mob attacked her and her followers in May last year. The protesters assembled near Parliament House, chanting: "Down with Than Shwe" and "Long Live Aung San Suu Kyi." Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party won a landslide 1990 election, but the military has refused to hand over power. India is one of Myanmar's major trading partners and is the second-largest market for Myanmar's goods after Thailand. Than Shwe and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh witnessed the signing of bilateral agreements aimed at expanding cooperation in industry, energy, rail transportation, communications, science, technology and health. The two countries have set a target of 1 (b) billion US dollars worth of trade by 2006. The current trade figures were not available. affairs and science and technology.
