In the heart of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley lies a 50-mile long unused rail line, stretching from Front Royal to Broadway. Norfolk Southern, who currently owns the line, owns a paralleling line just to the east, giving them little incentive to operate this line. Over the past few decades, portions of this line have been taken out-of-service. The result is a lengthy, essentially abandoned rail line that currently serves little benefit to the communities it passes through. Enjoy these shots of the Shenandoah Valley's historic rail line as it was in April 2024. The future of these rails have created controversy in the towns they traverse. Two organizations have separate visions on how to best utilize the property. One wishes to convert it into a recreational trail and the other wishes to restore the railroad and place a recreational trail beside it. Always use caution and respect private property when exploring unused rails.
