In the Syriac Orthodox Church, hymns with a dodecca syllabic (twelve syllables per line) structure are known as Boutho d'Mor Yaqub (മാർ യാക്കോബിന്റെ ബൊവൂസാ ). This is because Mor Yaqub (St. Jacob of Serugh AD451 to AD521) used 12 syllables per line for almost all memra written by him. In prayer books when you see the title Boutho d'Mor Yaqub it does not necessarily mean that hymn was authored by St. Jacob of Serugh, the title is just to inform the chanter that it is hymn with dodeccasyllabic structure. All hymns in the tune Boutho d'Mor Yaqub can be chanted in 8 different modes . It is also common to chant half of the Boutho in one mode and employ a ܫܘܚܠܦܐ (shuhlofo) .. a variation for the next half. So each of the 8 modes have its own shuhlofo as well. This video only has the primary 8 modes and does not include the shuhlofo for each of the 8 modes. In addition to the primary 8 modes and their corresponding 8 shuhlofo there are special tunes for the Boutho of Mor Yaqub for Great Lent, for certain days of the week in the Shimo and also a special tune for Holy Week. From all these special tunes only the special tune for Holy Week is included in this video. Here you can listen to the special tune for Great Lent:   / 1209819386219992   The Beth Gazo gives a ܛܘܦܣܐ (tufso) for each of the 8 modes and for each of the special tunes. The literal meaning of the word tufso is "example". The way the tune is taught is by the student memorizing the tufso based on what he heard from the malpan (teacher). There is slight textual difference between the "examples" (tufso) given for each of the eight modes in the Beth Gazo text of Pampakuda and the Beth Gazo text currently in print in the middle east. I have indicated those differences in the video in red font. This video includes the tufso (examples) as given in the Pampakuda text of the Beth Gazo and is chanted in the Malankara tradition. The Malankara tradition is a fusion of the Tur Abdin and Mosul traditions with a tinge of South India music. The English translations included with the video are from me; except that of mode 2 and mode 6. For those two modes, the tufso appears in the Shimo I have used the English translation of the Shimo published by SEERI under the title Awsar-Slawotho.
