Head to the Grist blog to read about the experiment and learn how to try it out – https://grist.co/ai-formula Imagine if writing spreadsheet formulas were as simple as asking a question. Curious, Grist's R&D team recently experimented with OpenAI and a prompt generation strategy to see how well AI could write formulas in Grist. Formulas are a long-standing pain for spreadsheets; while they offer significant benefits, many users find them daunting and unapproachable. The team wanted to uncover how effectively AI could solve this problem – in Grist. While spreadsheet formula writing bots aren't new, Grist isn't your everyday spreadsheet – it's an evolution. AI offers Grist a unique opportunity, not only because they support Python for writing their formulas, but because, unlike traditional spreadsheets, Grist has a clear structure with named tables, columns, and relationships between them. Each Grist document is essentially a relational database, with its schema neatly described in Python in Grist's unique "Code View" feature.
