(27 Aug 2012) A group of Syrian rebels pleaded on Sunday for the international community to help bring an end to the regime of President Bashar Assad. At their base in Marea - a town in northern Aleppo province - fighters in the Free Syrian Army (FSA) reflected on their recent battles with forces loyal to Syrian leader. They also questioned why the international community has not provided them with greater assistance. Mohamed Ezeldin sat in a small room adorned with guns and watched a news broadcast showing the latest destruction and violence in Syria. His bandana read "We Have God". Referring to massacres earlier this year in the towns of Houla and Azaz, Ezeldin said that "children were slaughtered in our country and the women were buried under the rubble". "Where is the world?" he added. "What are they doing? Where are the Muslims? How can they not be affected? It's as if the Muslims and the rest of the world are blind." Elsewhere, FSA rebel commander Abu Raed showed his squad a video he had recorded two days earlier on his mobile phone. It appeared to show an air strike by a Syrian fighter jet just outside his base. "We're filming but it's as if nobody is dealing with what they are seeing, the way we are seeing it," he said. "I have seen horrible things and I'm not talking about the people inside Syria, I am addressing the world." "Can you not see the shelling?" Raed added. "The destruction, the children that are being slaughtered, the old folks, is this not enough proof for the world? I mean, the least the world can do is provide us with some safe havens." The rebels have been fighting the Assad regime for 17 months - and activists say Syria's civil war has killed more than 20-thousand people. Despite their lack of resources and support from the international community, morale among these FSA fighters appeared to be strong. "By God's will, we will achieve victory here", said one young rebel fighter. "What we see on these devices in terms of situations and casualties intensifies our enthusiasm."
