If maize crop is planted after wheat crop especially during May or June for silage purpose, it may not bear grains in the cobs due to very high temperature at tasseling. High temperature induces pollen sterility, which may lead to incomplete filling of maize cobs. Maiz hybrids are more sensitive to heat wave than synthetic varieties. In this video, we have advised the farmers not to plant maize fodder crop for silage immediately after wheat crop. Under the scenario of changing climatic conditions, planting date of silage crop has been suggested from mid of July to mid of August. Silage made from corn crop is rich in nutrients and very beneficial for health of animals and plays an essential role for milk providing cows, buffalos, goats and other such animals. Silage production is a key factor in provision of food for these animals that are source of milk and meat for human beings. Corn varieties are playing very pivotal role in successful silage of fodder production of this crop. Some of these varieties are broad leaved and have stay green feature. Such varieties remain green in spite of cobs maturity and may be used for fodder or silage purpose. P1429 (Pioneer) , DK7024 (Monsanto) and few other types have been recommended to be planted for silage purpose. In this video we have advised the farmers about how to get 650 maunds/acre or record production of maize fodder. In this connection we have recommended DK 6789 (Bayer) or 30Y87 (Cortiva) to be sown at 7 inches spacing along one side of 88 ridges per acre. 100 kg DAP plus 25 kg SOP as basal fertilizer, 50 kg Zabardast urea at 2 week, 50 kg at 4 weeks and flooding of Nitropotash at grain filling stage was alsi suggested. Control of fall army worm through repeated application of Timer extra @ 400 ml/acre within 1st three weeks of sowing was also suggested. #maize #corn #silage #cropreformer
