Hate memorizing math facts? Me, too! We can cut the number of multiplication facts a student needs to learn almost in half by understanding why, when we multiply, the order the numbers are in doesn't matter (psst...the commutative property of multiplication). The answer will be the same either way. For example, let's help students understand why 3 x 4 = 4 x 3 . . . 2 x 5 = 5 x 2 . . . 2 x 3 = 3 x 2 , etc. Understanding the reasons for this helps build number sense, too! VIDEO 1 This video starts the TAMING the MULTIPLICATION MONSTER series by showing students how to understand multiplication. For example, how do we think about what 4 x 2 is "telling us?" VIDEO 3 In this video, we learn how to remember our "x 9" multiplication facts by finding the "secret code" for the "x 9" multiplication facts. Although this topic comes a bit later in the "TAMING the MULTIPLICATION MONSTER" workbook, it's Marty's favorite multiplication fact family, so it's being shared earlier. VIDEO 4 In this video, students tap their understanding of multiplication to learn how to multiply by 1. They'll realize that if they understand multiplication, they already know how to multiply 1 by any number. VIDEOS 5+ These videos are under construction . . . stay tuned (or check out the workbook for a preview). HINT ABOUT LEARNING MULTIPLICATION FACTS If your child is doing their multiplication facts by skip counting, relying on addition, using their fingers (there's a way to multiply by 9 this way), or some other way in which, for example, a given multiplication fact is embedded in a longer song or rhyme, I strongly recommend working to develop individual multiplication fact "automaticity." Why? Because to do the math that is right around the corner (e.g., division, fractions, proportions, algebra, etc.), having direct, quick mental access to individual multiplication facts is really, really, really important! In addition to helping children gain "automaticity" with their multiplication facts, the approach taken in these videos has the important added benefits of building number sense and being a lot more fun than memorizing! For TODDLERS/Pre-SCHOOL CHILDREN . . . If you have younger children, check out Dr. Epstein's pre-school/pre-k math books and videos about the importance of subitizing and teaching counting to a child in a way that's mathematically meaningful. For KINDERGARTEN/1ST GRADE CHILDREN . . . Be sure to check out Dr. Epstein's Kindergarten/1st-Grade addition story/coloring/activity books (e.g., "Ten Friends Save The Day" . . . "Adding Fun!"). They are a fun, educational way to learn key addition facts! ABOUT THE "AUTHOR" This video series parallels the "TAMING THE MULTIPLICATION MONSTER" workbook written by Dr. Marty Epstein available on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/0997126639). Dr. Epstein is a mom with a PhD in Math Education (she also holds an MS from Penn State and an MBA from Harvard) who taught her children multiplication this way. (And they went on to study Math and Physics!) Wishing you lots of fun with math!
