Dr. Charles Cochrane, M.D., The Scripps Research Institute Dr. Charles Cochrane, M.D. is the co-founder and Professor Emeritus of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) in La Jolla, California. Dr. Cochrane's research focus at the Department of Immunology and Microbial Sciences at TSRI is in Molecular Mechanism of Inflammatory Injury, and the Development of a Synthetic Peptide Pulmonary Surfactant for Use in Infant and Adult Human Beings. In 1988, Dr. Cochrane began research to solve a chemical equation to counteract Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS). Twenty-four years later, following extensive research involving lab and clinical testing on animals and humans, the Food and Drug Administration approved a potentially live-saving drug SURFAXIN developed by Dr. Cochrane. "March 6 was the date that opened huge doors to save many lives...and improve life for million others," he said. SURFAXIN will be manufactured and distributed by Discovery Labs, where Dr. Cochrane serves as an Advisor. Dr. Cochrane authored and co-authored numerous distinguished publications. In 2004, Dr. Cochrane received the "Live and Breathe Award" by the American Lung Association.
