Interview of Monday, 1 July 2024 with MG Charles Cleveland, US Army (Ret) - former Director of Operations and Military Deputy Director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency Interviewer: Jennifer Daniel, former senior officer of NGA and ODNI. Host: AFIO President James Hughes, a former senior CIA Operations Officer. They discuss General Cleveland's long and fascinating career in multiple agencies in the Intelligence Community. The interview runs 49 minutes with many Q&As. BIOS: CHARLES CLEVELAND, Major General, US Army (Retired), has over 34 years experience in the Army, Joint Special Operations, and the Intelligence Community. He commanded operational units at every level of his career, served in multiple war zones and foreign posts, and held a variety of strategic positions directly supporting senior policy makers and Agency leaders in the Intelligence Community and the Defense Department. Throughout, he developed enduring relationships with Defense, Intelligence, Congressional, and private sector counterparts to advance the nation's national security efforts. He is currently a Senior Counselor at Palantir Technologies, a Principal with Pallas Advisors, and a board member of Vigilant Torch, a veteran focused, non-profit foundation. Charlie’s final role while on active duty was as the Director of Operations and Military Deputy Director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) where he provided leadership, oversight, and management of the Agency's worldwide collection and analysis operations. With multiple business units, thousands of employees, and over a billion dollars in resources, Charlie set the strategic vision for the Agency's operations and led the day-to-day execution of its mission supporting the Intelligence Community, the US Military, and multiple foreign partners. Earlier, Charlie served in a variety of tactical and Special Operations organizations including the 82nd Airborne Division, the 75th Ranger Regiment, the U.S. Army Office of Military Support, and the Joint Special Operations Command. Leading operational units throughout, he served seven combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq and completed multiple operational deployments with Intelligence Community partners in Latin America and South West Asia. Charlie holds a BA in Political Science from Furman University and was a U.S. Army War College Fellow at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. He and his family reside in Washington DC. JENNIFER DANIEL served as the Associate Director for Enterprise at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA); the Assistant Director of National Intelligence for Mission Priorities, Analysis, and Collection in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence; Director of Human Capital/NGA; Director of NGA's Persistent GEOINT Office; and Director of Office of Corporate Communications/ NGA. During her 37-year career in the Intelligence Community and national security enterprise, Ms. Daniel was known for her transformational leadership across diverse mission sets to include collection, analysis, IT Solutions, human capital, budget management and international relations. She currently serves as Chief Executive Officer, JS&N Consulting LLC. Ms. Daniel earned a BA degree in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts. She lives in Northern Virginia with her husband and son. JAMES R. HUGHES currently serves as the 17th President of AFIO. His service began January 2015. He had a career of US Government service spanning 37 years in numerous foreign countries with a particular focus in the Middle East. He started in U.S. Military Intelligence in the late 1960s and then joined the CIA’s Clandestine Service. He served overseas as a Chief of Station several times, and at CIA Headquarters in a number of senior management positions, including as Chief of the Near East and South Asia Division, in the Directorate of Operations [today’s National Clandestine Service]. He was also named the Associate Deputy Director of Operations (ADDO) at the National Security Agency, 1998-99. Following his retirement from the government in 2005, he joined EDS in Herndon, VA, as the Client Industry Executive for the U.S. Intelligence Community. After the HP acquisition of EDS, he continued to serve in a similar capacity until his retirement in 2012. His parents were missionaries in Turkey in the 1950s, where Jim spent his formative years.
