This legal coup d'état, initiated on October 24th in Naples, proved to be a masterstroke. Addressing a crowd of 40,000 Fascist party members, he delivered an ultimatum to the fragile Italian parliamentary monarchy: "Either relinquish power to us, or we will march on Rome!" Clad in black shirts and wielding clubs, the militants set off towards the capital. This legendary march on Rome marked the beginning of Mussolini's reign over a totalitarian regime that endured for two decades.
