My ongoing project to refine and distribute seed for Bulgarian Giant leek steps up a notch. I'm planting more plants and planning to save more seed this year, which will be for sale eventually. The whole cycle takes more than a year, so the seed won't even be ready for the 2017 growing season! I'll still be eating these leeks when it's time to plant leeks in 2017. I have seed from 2014 for sale in my store (or will within the day if you're reading this early). It still germinates strongly as you can see in the video at the end. Last time I tested it, the germination rate was nearly 100%. Support on / skillcult has been critical in keeping me experimenting and making content. Blog and website: www.skillcult.com/blog Instagram and Facebook @SkillCult Growing big leeks is not that hard, but it takes time, lots of fertilizer and good genetics. If you treat leeks as a vegetable instead of as a condiment or spice, then growing big leeks is better than growing small ones. Bulgarian giant has a good combination of attributes for the home garden. It is self blanching, so there is little if any washing involved. It is large. And, it is tasty! It's one downfall is perhaps that it is not super hardy. I've been selecting against winter damage for some years now, but it would have to be grown through the winter with protection in very cold climates. It will still make a good summer leek though and better than most for the same reasons listed above.
