In the scene, Effie is shown alongside her pet lamb and kitten, set against the backdrop of the wooden house her father constructed in Western Massachusetts. Dressed in mourning attire, Elmer and his wife appear distant and stiff in the background. Interestingly, the painting received its current title many years later, and not by Elmer himself. In Adrienne Rich’s poem inspired by the artwork, it is the voice of the deceased Effie that narrates the scene.
