Upper City Fortification, Acropolis of Thessaloniki, and Trigonio Gate The Byzantine Walls are located in the upper part of Thessaloniki, including the Upper City Fortification, the Acropolis of Thessaloniki, and Trigonio Gate. These ancient fortifications were built during the Byzantine period and significantly protected the city from invasions. The Acropolis of Thessaloniki, a fortified complex, offers breathtaking views of the city and the Thermaic Gulf. To visit these landmarks, you can start by exploring the Upper City area, where you'll find remnants of the fortifications. Don't miss the Trigonio Gate, an impressive entrance that once served as a crucial passage into the city. Today, you can walk through the gate for free 24/7. The Chain Tower is open on weekdays from 9 AM to 3 PM, except Mondays. Lower City Fortification Moving on to the Lower City, we find the Lower City Fortification. Situated closer to the waterfront, this defensive structure also dates back to the Byzantine era. The fortification walls served as a protective barrier for the city and its inhabitants.
