Dairy Section 🥛🍶🐄 Any reference to the birth of a calf is called calving. 🐄 •Normal Calving The water bag appears through the vulva. The cow will strain more. The head of the calf will appear and this breaks the bag. You will then be able to see both of the calf's front feet. 🐄 •Assist Calving Cows should take 30 minutes to one hour to calve - no more than two hours. Heifers should take two to three hours to calve – no more than four hours. Progress should be made every 20 minutes. If she is not making progress, intervention may be needed. 🐄 Once the head and shoulders are exposed, rotate the calf a quarter of a turn to aid in the hips entering the pelvic canal. If this does not allow delivery, pull the calf downward at a 45-degree angle, or nearly parallel with the rear legs of the cow. "Hip lock" can be a problem serious enough to cause loss of the calf. 🐄 If you are assisting the cow, try to pull when she pushes. Work with her, not against her. If the cow lets up, give her a break and then continue the cycle of pulling and pushing. This is a good collaborative way to get the calf out of the cow with minimal stress to both cow and calf.
