"Modern in the Making: Post-War Craft and Design in British Columbia" is the most comprehensive view of mid-century craft and design from this region assembled to date. Featuring over 300 works, the exhibition examines the furniture, ceramics, textiles, fashion and jewellery that defined West Coast modern living in the mid-twentieth century. At the centre of the exhibition is a focused look at the collecting practices of public institutions and impassioned private individuals, whose work remains largely invisible to the public eye. In this video interview, Siyameqwot Vivian Williams visits the Chilliwack Museum and Archives, with Dr. Stelomethet Ethel Gardner and Dr. Lolehawk Laura Buker, to see the work of her grandmother, Stó:lō weaver Mary Peters. In 1971, Peters became a founding member of the Salish Weavers Guild, a cooperative dedicated to the revitalization of traditional Salish weaving practices. Williams, Gardner and Buker share stories about their experiences, as well as insights into the value, importance, complexities and pleasures of making and collecting these works.
