Universities play a major role in contemporary societies, including when these societies experience violence or political upheaval. In this lecture, researcher Maya Wind examine how academic institutions can become structuring actors in situations of conflict: through the knowledge they produce, the technologies they develop, the relationships they maintain with political authorities, and the narratives they circulate in the public sphere. Maya Wind is a President’s and Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Departments of Black Study and Media & Cultural Studies at the University of California, Riverside. Her first book, Towers of Ivory and Steel: How Israeli Universities Deny Palestinian Freedom (Verso 2024), was awarded the American Educational Researcher Association Division of Curriculum Studies outstanding book award, and has been published and is forthcoming in translation in five languages. Her writing on the imbrication of the university with violence have appeared in public and academic journals including Cultural Anthropology and South Atlantic Quarterly.
