Music composed entirely from electromagnetic field recordings of London's bus network, captured across 4 routes during 2015-2016. Using electromagnetic pickups mounted against bus windows, raw electrical impulses/emissions from hybrid-electric buses were recorded and transformed into 4 individual musical compositions then combined to create this evolving longform soundscape. These signals; generated by motors, indicators, and onboard systems exist constantly yet remain beyond human perception until translated into sound and music. Each musical piece is built from 4 specific routes: 0:00 - Route 1 [Southbound] - Waterloo to New Kent Road (June 2015) 11:30 - Route 141 [Northbound] - Moorgate to Wood Green (November 2013) 21:00 - Route 139 [Eastbound] - Baker Street to Waterloo (February 2015) 31:30 - Route 21 [Southbound] - Moorgate to Old Kent Road (July 2016) The compositional process involves layering the same electromagnetic source material at multiple speeds simultaneously, creating harmonic relationships and revealing musical patterns within purely utilitarian infrastructure. Through temporal manipulation and spectral processing, the mechanical signatures of bus systems become evolving sonic landscapes. Part of an ongoing series of "Temporal works" exploring time as both subject and medium. The decade between recording and composition adds another temporal dimension, these electromagnetic captures become both historical artifacts and contemporary musical material.
