Yuanmingyuan Road: A Walk Through History Though short, Yuanmingyuan Road is steeped in the atmosphere of a century past. It is a stunning showcase where Neoclassical, Baroque, Gothic, Renaissance, Art Deco, and Eclectic styles stand side by side. On rainy days, the misty vibe feels surprisingly like London, making it a perfect spot for a stroll and photography. Located in the historic Rockbund district, this "hidden gem of a pedestrian street" is famous for its unique architecture and tranquil ambiance. 📍 Location & Layout Situated in the Huangpu District, right near the confluence of the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek, this north-south street stretches about 462 meters from Dianchi Road to South Suzhou Road. 📜 A "Never Widened" Legacy Established in the 1860s, this is one of Shanghai's 64 "Never Widened" first-class historic roads, preserving the original urban texture. Originally built by the International Settlement Municipal Council, it was split into "Upper" and "Lower" sections. In 1886, the upper section became "Museum Road" (now Huxiu Road) due to the Asia Museum, while the lower section was officially named Yuanmingyuan Road in 1943. Once a hub for newspapers and cultural institutions, today it is known as an "open-air museum of modern architecture." With its building lines locked to preserve history, the street now blends the old with the new—featuring trendy cafes and restaurants. It has become a "readable city" demonstration point and a top destination for Citywalk enthusiasts.
