I decided last-minute to do the SB100. I wasn’t really in shape for it, but figured it’d be a great challenge either way. This would be my longest ride and the most climbing in a ride, quite a bite to chew on. It went ok. Lots of drafting and fast-moving in the beginning, and then I really lost time climbing up Gibraltar, where my lack of prep caught up with me. I also learned something at around mile 75: Don’t eat two dates at once! That messed up my stomach, and instead of giving me a boost actually took me out of my second wind. Still a beautiful day in the saddle. I enjoyed the early fast pace in the group and had a speedy descent down from East Camino Cielo all the way to the bottom of Old San Marcos Pass Road. A big thanks to Jay Correa for pulling me to the finish line for the last 10 miles or so, I was pretty toast at that point. Another big thanks to the organizers and all the helpers, and supporters. I realized early that it was going to be difficult to document while riding in a group. Not to mention considering the workload. So relatively early, I messed up and didn’t turn the GoPro off, I couldn’t hear the beeping, and recorded for almost 20 minutes, which then drained the battery and my enthusiasm. Stupid mistake brought on by trying to figure out this new situation of riding in a group that is behaving somewhat competitively. But all good, I got enough POV footage to put this video together. No photography, I was considering it, and luckily decided against bringing another camera. Here is the Strava route: / strava
