Ligands can be classified based on how many atoms in the ligand molecule can donate electron pairs to the central metal atom. This is known as the denticity of the ligand. Monodentate Ligands: These ligands have only one donor atom that forms a bond with the central metal. Polydentate Ligands: These ligands can donate more than two electron pairs. Examples include: EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid): A common hexadentate ligand (can donate six electron pairs) Ligands can also be classified based on the geometry of the coordination complex they form with the central metal ion. Unidentate Ligands: Ligands that coordinate through a single donor atom. Bidentate Ligands: Ligands that coordinate through two donor atoms. Chelating Ligands: A special case of bidentate or polydentate ligands that form stable, ring-like structures when binding to the metal center. The classification of ligands is essential for understanding the behavior of coordination compounds, the stability of complexes, and the geometry of coordination around the metal center.
