@FairObserver #pakistan #india #challenges #jinnah #fo Dr Ishtiaq Ahmed joins FO° Talks to present his controversial thoughts on Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. Speakers: Claire Price, Chair of Board at Fair Observer Dr Ishtiaq Ahmed, Professor Emeritus of Political Science, Stockholm University Jinnah's challenge was to convince the British that a partitioned India served their interests, facing opposition from the Indian National Congress advocating for a united India. Jinnah championed Pakistan from 1940, resisting compromise on India's future without British involvement, justifying partition using arguments separating Hindus and Muslims. Jinnah's triumph was dividing India. There were conflicting promises made to the British, the Indian National Congress, and the Indian Muslim community. Jinnah's vision of Pakistan varied, it was either a progressive democracy with Sharia inspiration or an Islamic state with Sharia as its core, leading to conflicting legacies. Jinnah chose to be Governor General over Prime Minister due to distrust of Mountbatten, and linguistic challenges in Pakistan's provinces. Jinnah's focus on creating Pakistan limited his consideration of potential challenges, leading to unforeseen consequences. Also discussed are Jinnah's secular image, marriage, attire, and time in London. Jinnah's motivations and his role in accepting the partition of India into separate and distinct entities are also questioned. Jinnah's complex legacy, challenges within an Islamic state, diverse interpretations of his intentions, current status in Pakistan which is revered and praised, with limited room for critical discussion, his significance, and how his actions shaped contemporary Pakistan are all important. The complexity of the partition, the challenges of defense, and the strategic position of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) are highlighted. The development of nuclear weapons in India and Pakistan is driven by perceived threats and geopolitical dynamics. A call for improved relations between India and Pakistan, advocating for cooperation and peace, is necessary. FO° Talks are deep dives into issues of importance to the world.
