An Evening to Honor Thomas Taylor

The Dallas Architecture Forum presented a special Panel to honor Thomas Taylor, PE., one of the most admired Texas-based structural engineers in practice. The evening featured intriguing stories about some of the most significant structures Thomas has been involved in creating. A design-oriented innovator, Taylor is recognized for his decades of structural engineering experience. Thomas served as Project Manager and Principal-in-Charge for over 50 structures in the Dallas Central Business District, including the Nasher Sculpture Center, Thanks-Giving Square Chapel, Dallas Police Memorial, Federal Reserve Bank, the Dallas Convention Center, and the AT&T Corporate Headquarters. Taylor pioneered the introduction of a range of structural systems, including a precast concrete-stack wall system for parking garages, the tallest slipform core for high-rise buildings, and an insulated, load-bearing masonry cavity wall. He also spearheaded the use of tilt-wall construction for ‘high design’ architectural buildings in the early 2000s, including the Chapel of St. Ignatius at the University of Seattle with Steven Holl Architect. Now the Principal and Director of DeSimone Consulting Engineering’s Dallas office, Taylor was previously with Datum Engineers, a company he incorporated from Frank Chappell & Associates, and which he built over the decades into one of the most respected engineering firms in Texas. Taylor has gained wide acclaim as “an architect’s engineer”, and has been named an honorary member of AIA Dallas and the Texas Society of Architects. He has also given years of leadership to The Dallas Architecture Forum, serving on both its Board and currently on its Advisory Board. The evening featured some of the most significant structural engineering challenges Taylor has encountered over his distinguished career, each with a special “human-interest” backstory. The program was moderated by Ron Stelmarski, FAIA of Perkins& Will. The program, organized by The Forum in close collaboration with Taylor, was presented on April 9, 2024.
