“Love on the Rocks” is an iconic popular song that became one of singer Neil Diamond’s most popular ballads. It was prominently featured in the 1980 movie, “The Jazz Singer.” Neil Diamond starred in the movie and played the character Yussel Rabinovitch, a young Jewish cantor who desired to have a musical career outside of the synagogue as pop singer Jess Robin. Oddly enough, the song “Love on the Rocks” began its life with the title “Scotch on the Rocks.” and was co-authored by Diamond and French singer-songwriter Gilbert Bécaud. It was named after Becaud’s favorite drink. Initially, the song was a breezy, reggae-like demo but when Neil Diamond and Bécaud saw the potential of the powerful melody, they wrote the now-familiar lyrics that are more serious and dramatic. It was a centerpiece of “The Jazz Singer” and although the movie did not enjoy great ratings and popularity, the song went on to become a huge success achieving multi-platinum status. The story presented in the song is that of a man who had fallen very deeply in love only to be left lonely and disenchanted. The beginning lyrics tell it all, “Love on the rocks, ain’t no big surprise. Pour me a drink and I’ll tell you my lies. There’s nothing to do but sing the blues when your love’s on the rocks.” Tony’s performance of the opening line of “Love on the Rocks” sets a perfect melancholic tone for the entire song. He continues telling the story with powerful and believable emotion. His facial expressiveness and tonal quality holds you captive throughout the entire song as your find yourself completely taken in.
